DELETING MAIL
When you first begin to get e-mail, it's so exciting that it's difficult to imagine just throwing it away. Eventually, you will need to learn how to delete messages, or else you will run out of room.

The physical act of throwing away mail is easy enough that you probably have figured out how to do it already. In Netscape (either the Netscape Navigator 3.0 Mail window or the Netscape 4.0 Messenger program), click the message and then the Delete button on the toolbar, or press Ctrl+D, or choose File/Delete.

You can often delete mail without even reading it. If you subscribe to mailing lists, certain topics might not interest you. After you see the subject line, you might want to delete it without reading it.

SAVING E-MAIL
You can save e-mail in a few different ways:

1.) Save it in a folder full of messages.
2.) Save it in a regular file.
3.) Print it and put it in a file cabinet with paper mail.

The easiest method usually is to stick message in a folder (a folder is usually no more than a file full of messages with some sort of separator between each message).

Two general approaches are used in filing mail: by sender and by topic. Whether you use one or the other or both is mostly a matter of taste. Some mail programs help you file stuff by the sender's name. For filing by topic, it's entirely up to you to come up with the folder names. The most difficult part is coming up with memorable names. Try to come up with names that are obvious, and don't abbreviate.

If you use Windows or Mac, you can save all or part of a message by copying it into a text file, or word processing document. Select the text of the message, then in Windows, press Ctrl+C or choose Edit/Copy to copy the text to the Clipboard. Switch to your word processor and press Ctrl+V, or choose Edit/Paste to make the message appear where your cursor is.

In Netscape 3.0 Mail window, you can save a message by clicking the message and choosing Message/Move from the menu. Then select the folder name from the list that appears. An easier way to move a message is to drag it from the list of messages to another folder on the list of folders. To make a new folder, choose File/New from the menu.

Netscape 4.0 has a new window, the Netscape Message Center, in which you can fool around with folders, so its filing commands work a little differently. In the Netscape 4.0 Inbox window, you can save a message by clicking the message, choosing Message/File message from the menu, and choosing the folder from the list that appears. To make a new folder, choose Windows/Folders from the menu to display the Netscape Message Center window, and then choose File/New Folder. This window lists your mail folders and the Usenet newsgroups to which you subscribe. To move a message to a folder, you can click it in your Inbox window and drag it to the folder, in your Message Center window.

To save a message or several messages in a text file (in either version of Netscape), select the message or messages and choose File/Save As from the menu. Click in the Save as type box and choose Plain Text (*.txt) from the list that appears. Type a filename and click the Save button.
